The fifth Metamaterials UK Conference & Forum brings a unique opportunity to network with delegates from all domains of the metamaterials community to collaborate on cutting-edge developments in metamaterials science. This is a critical opportunity to engage in metamaterials developments; meet with potential collaborators; and shape the future of the metamaterials community in the UK.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Astrophysics Group at the University of Exeter, we are pleased to announce the international conference “Discs on the Exe”. The conference will cover observations and theory of circumstellar discs, ranging from the formation of discs during star formation, to the processes involved in the formation of planetary systems and shaping of debris discs. Particular topics will include:

• Protoplanetary disc formation, clusters and Class 0/I discs.
• Protoplanetary disc structures and their evolution.
• Planets in discs and how they shape them
• Disc chemistry
• Protoplanetary disc dispersal and debris discs

On Saturday 1st August we are holding a one-day Reunion open to any former and current members of the Exeter Astrophysics Group and their spouses/partners/families.  The day’s events will start at 10am and end with an evening Barbeque.  Family members can attend either the whole day, or just the BBQ.  University accommodation can also be booked for the weekend.

Ticket Price: £250, including the training, catering during the day and the conference dinner on the 21st of September. Accommodation is not included. Who? Early career researchers, staff in junior industry roles, PhD researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and junior lecturers. This event will be suitable for all early career staff as an opportunity to upskill and engage with career development opportunities. Aim The UK Metamaterials Network’s Early Careers Conference’s mission is to breakdown barriers between industry and academia in the early careers metamaterials community. The conference aims to promote and embed a culture of collaboration and entrepreneurship within the UK metamaterials community, by developing a mutual understanding of the challenges, barriers and opportunities for technology adoption and upskilling future leaders in the field. Through the development and support of future leaders in metamaterials the conference with help to ensure the sustainability of a vibrant UK metamaterials ecosystem.

This event is for anyone interested in developing the sustainability aspects of their research/approach, with a focus on metamaterials considerations and applications. This is also for non-metamaterial researchers interested in transitioning or collaborating more with metamaterial methods/researchers. Sustainability is a broad and multidisciplinary challenge area. To evidence direct impact in sustainability (a regular request in many funding calls) fundamental and applied metamaterial research needs to be analysed through a sustainability lens. Their currently lacks specific metamaterial/sustainability training to develop understanding, approaches and analysis to plan and test metamaterials sustainability potential. This summer schools topics will cover: Introductory sessions to both sustainability and metamaterial design Life Cycle Analysis workshop sessions to aid analysis of attendees designs Writing for sustainability (e.g. including relevant information in papers and bids) Renewable energy lab tours, amongst other activities still to be confirmed.
