DescriptionFollowing the success of our Social Research Methods taster day, last autumn, the Social and Economic Research Unit (SERU), at the Institute of Cornish Studies, The University of Exeter, are very pleased to announce a spring – summer programme of CPD training days in Evidence and Evaluation. A key aim of SERU is to build and support a robust and autonomous research culture in Cornwall. These sessions are, then, aimed at organisations who need or wish to undertake research to support their activities. This might be to understand their client base better, to explore the local conditions in which they operate, to support grant bids or project evaluation. No previous knowledge of research is required and alongside the sessions themselves. SERU colleagues will be pleased to advise on possible research organisations might wish to undertake. The course will be taught by Prof. Malcolm Williams with special guest senior lecturer Dr Charlotte Brookfield for the last session. Course attendees will receive a certificate of achievement for continuous professional development purposes. Here are some of the testimonials from our taster day: “Thoroughly enjoyed the course and it was very relevant to my work” “The analysis and techniques for collecting data, tying it into social and economic priorities chimed very strongly with our own organisational needs, and my role in the organisation.” “I thought it was excellent, very high quality. I think there are many organisations and many employment roles that would benefit from this training and pay for their staff to have it.” “Insightful, knowledgeable, educational, inspiring, quality learning experience”

Introduction to Research Methods for Evidence and Evaluation
Session One 25th April 2024 10.00am-3.00pm
Penryn Campus – Peter Lanyon Building (Map No 12) : Room Seminar 3
Policy and strategy decisions and the evaluation of programmes or activities need evidence. Rigorous social research methods can provide that evidence. In this introductory session we will introduce participants to the main methods of research: surveys, interviews and focus groups. When should each of these be used and what they can do for your organisation.
Focus Groups and Individual Interviews
Session Two 23rd May 2024 10.00am-3.00pm
Penryn Campus, Exchange Building (Map No 2) : Room: Red
What can focus groups tell you about people’s views, attitudes and beliefs and what happens when they discuss them with others? Or what about when you want to explore the experiences and views of individuals? What are the strategies and techniques you need and what are the possibilities and limitations of focus groups and interviews. This session will take a ‘hands on’ approach and active learning approach to these methods of research.
How to Design and carry out a simple survey
Session Three 20th June 2024 10.00am-3.00pm
Penryn Campus, Environment and Sustainability Institute (Map No 8) : Room: Trevithick Suite
Surveys are about finding out characteristics, behaviour, attitudes and beliefs. They are fundamental if you want to know these things about groups of people with confidence. They are essential to good evidence. A well designed simple survey can be the backbone of the evidence organisations need. In this session we will explore various types of survey, we design a simple survey questionnaire and we will introduce you to simple sampling techniques.
Please note, for this session, you should bring along a laptop or a tablet.
Analysing Survey data using Excel with Special Guest Lecturer Dr Charlotte Brookfield
