Mathematics and StatisticsMathematics and StatisticsDartington CriticalEarth Training Event December 2023DescriptionThis is a training event for the CriticalEarth ITN. Dates: There is a training workshop Monday 4th December and Tuesday 5th December 2023. You can book B&B for arrival on Sunday 3rd December directly from Dartington Hall. Additional participants can book to join the training courses on Monday and Tuesday only; there are events for CriticalEarth delegates only on Wednesday 6th December. Objective: Provide a thorough overview of the scaling results which have been found in the climate system and the possible mechanisms behind this behaviour. Specific Themes: Origins of scaling, power laws, multifractal scaling. Relevance: Guarantees that the participants have adequate knowledge of this new paradigm of climate variability and be able to connect the results to clear climate dynamical processes. https://indico.nbi.ku.dk/event/1983/
Challenges of predicting critical transitions in natural systemsDescriptionThis workshop at the University of Exeter is supported by CriticalEarth (as Workshop 3: Early warning signals for critical transitions), by TiPES and by the Global Systems Insitute of the University of Exeter. This workshop aims to survey the current state of the art in methodologies for early warning signals, with a view to extending and improving these and applying them to warn of impending critical transitions (tipping points) in natural systems. It will take place at the University of Exeter campus from midday on 7th to late afternoon on 8th December 2023. We plan for plenty of time on Friday afternoon for interactions and discussions among delegates. An optional conference meal will be on the evening of 7th December (to be organised separately). Accommodation: You should book yourself accommodation in Exeter if needed. We have reserved a number of rooms at the Mercure Rougemont Hotel in Exeter that will be held until 7th November 2023. For this you should call the hotel Mon-Fri 9-5.30 (UK time zone) on +44 1392 410237 quoting the reference "UOFE0712" and paying a deposit. https://indico.nbi.ku.dk/event/1995/
